KARACHI: The Mohatta Palace Museum has launched an exhibition “Labyrinth of Reflections: The Art of Rashid Rana 1992 – 2012” at the museum here on Sunday. Chief Election Commissioner, Justice (Retd) Fakhruddin G Ibrahim inaugurated the exhibition as a chief guest. This exhibition of contemporary art in Karachi is a retrospective survey of Rashid Rana’s artistic career in Pakistan. Rashid Rana is an artist of the new millennium, a new age artist in every sense, who traverses the media of painting, photography and video installations to make innovative and evocative imagery. His work has been displayed in a number of museums and galleries abroad and this is the first time that a collection of this magnitude displaying his work, is being held in Pakistan. The conceptual and formal complexity of his work is unparalleled in the region, as he is able to reach a larger audience employing imagery that his viewers can relate to their lives. His grid constructs explore dimensions of media and identity, critiquing the impact of globalization worldwide whilst portraying the interplay of tradition and modernity in South Asia today. Rashid Rana’s photographic mosaics, where he creates a macro image out of thousands of miniscule, pixel like images, capture the disparate extremes and dichotomies of modern day life. The multifaceted nature of his work addresses concerns from a socio-political and cultural to an aesthetic nature. Pixelation emerges as a metaphor, through the relationship between the larger image and its micro constituents, and leads to reflections over surface and depth and the tensions between simulated representations of a whole and its real parts. Art in the exhibition is also curated by Naazish Ata Ullah, Nasreen Askari and Hameed Haroon.
